
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. Latifah was the second daughter of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her social politics and acting skills as well as her gift for rhyme. When she was 8 years young an Muslim cousin gave her the name Latifah which means "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah sang with the choir of the church of Shiloh located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first public performance singing "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a production of The Wizard of Oz. Latifah's mother was the catalyst. She was always attuned to students and the music. Mark James, a local disc jockey who is also popularly known as D.J., was invited to the celebration.
