
Ormond was born in Epsom (Surrey) as the daughter of Josephine Ormond, a laboratory technician and John Ormond. Ormond is the second of five children born to her parents. Her first performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady attracted the attention of many. She then attended Cranleigh School and Guildford High School. After one year in arts college, she transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. She graduated in 1988. Ormond first appeared in British TV in the show Traffik which focused on the illegal heroin trade from the Far East to the streets of Europe. Ormond played the heroin addicted daughter of the main character, she was a Home Office minister who was engaged in the fight against heroin importation. This was Ormond's first role and was praised by the critics as a success.
